KICKBOXING 1. Course Description: This course is designed to introduce the student to the skills and strategies of Kickboxing. It will introduce concepts of fitness and cardiorespiratory conditioning achieved through participating in kickboxing. The student will also be introduced to effective self-defence techniques developed from kickboxing skills. This course is structured as a martial arts class. 2. Course Objectives : At the conclusion of the course the student will be able to: 1/ perform the kicks, punches, blocks and stances used in kickboxing. 2/ perform falls, sweeps and throws 3/ perform competition sparring rounds within the framework of the class. 4/ demonstrate effective combative strategies. 5/ describe the rules of kickboxing 6/ demonstrate the traditional philosophies employed in martial arts 3. Dojo Procedures The class will include the following: 1/ Traditional bow-in procedure 2/ Warm-up exercises and stretching 3/ Strengthening exercises (sit-ups and push-ups) 4/ Cardio-respiratory exercises including running and skipping 5/ Kicking, punching and blocking 6/ Stance-work, ducking, weaving, bobbing, feinting, parrying and evading 7/ Practice kicking and punching into training focus bags. 8/ Sparring rounds with partners (minimal or non-contact rounds) 9/ Falling sweeps and throws. SUPPLIES RECOMMENDED Clothing and workout gear must allow for freedom of movement and flexibility. Kickboxing shorts and shirts are recommended. Nylon bicycle shorts underneath kickboxing shorts are also recommended. No shoes will be worn in the dojo. Sparring equipment (boxing gloves, padded feet and head protection) is required for students during all sparring sessions. A limited supply of used equipment is available, but it is compulsory that students purchase their own equipment within a month. It is compulsory for all male students to have a groin protector and a mouth guard. It is compulsory for all female students to have a mouth guard and it is highly recommended for them to have a groin protector |
